A case of mistaken identity
Apparently for a few days now, the internet has been abuzz with speculation as to the identity, background, purpose, funding, and what-have you of one Donnie Davis, who runs a web site called LoveGodsWay.org. On the site, this guy talks about overcoming one's gay nature through God. Okay, well, we've heard all this before, right? Well, this is a little different. This guy is a musician and has a video of a song called "God Hates Fags." Seriously. Or, maybe not seriously, some contend. Some gay bloggers and other media watchers have been insisting that this is nothing more than a parody of fundamentalist wackos. Maybe a reasonable conclusion.
So anyway, on this nutjob's site, there's a list of gay or pro-gay artists to "watch out for." On the list is Bobby Conn, for whom my dear friend Colby Starck plays drums. (Colby also plays for Head of Femur.) And this is where it gets weird.
Because somebody, looking at various pictures on the Bobby Conn web site, noticed that a couple of the band pictures made Colby look like this fundamentalist ass Donnie Davis. In reality, Colby looks nothing like the guy, but at the time Colby was heavier and had a moustache and his ponytailed hair looks, in some of these pictures, like Donnie Davis's short haircut.
So whoever noticed this connection alerted the media, and first a blog called Good As You identified Colby as Donnie, and then Dan Savage of the syndicated newspaper column Savage Love picked it up in his blog, and now it's turned into a big deal.
Radar Magazine tracked Colby down and he's now officially denied it with this wonderful quotation: "I'm not as fat as he is, but it's really the love that I have in my heart for homosexuals that distinguishes us."
Below: My friend Colby, not a gay-bashing ex-gay fundamentalist, with Matt Focht at Garth's wedding.

(That's Colby on the left, with the asparagus spear in his breast pocket.)
